The rooms Phoenix builds and never conditions
Half the houses in this valley have a room the ductwork never reached: a converted garage, a casita over the back wall, an Arizona room somebody glassed in during the Clinton administration. Extending ducts into them is usually the wrong answer — the main system was not sized for the load, and a 130° garage bolted onto a 3-ton heat pump drags the whole house down with it.
A ductless mini-split treats the room as its own zone with its own inverter-driven compressor. It cools a garage gym at 5am in August, heats the casita for a January guest, and sips power the rest of the time. Install day is one day: head on the wall, line set through a three-inch core, condenser on a pad or wall bracket outside.
What we install and what we skip
We fit Mitsubishi and Daikin heads, and a Bosch inverter unit where the budget calls for it. We skip the $900 online-special units — the refrigerant flare kits on those fail in Phoenix heat within two summers, and a leaked-out mini-split is worth less than no mini-split, because now somebody owns a recovery job.
One head, one zone is the honest configuration for most garages. Multi-zone systems make sense for a casita with a bedroom and a main room; past three heads, a small ducted system usually wins on cost and upkeep, and we will say so.
