Thermostats that know about time-of-use
In Phoenix a thermostat is a billing instrument. APS and SRP both price the 4–7pm window at multiples of the midnight rate, and a thermostat that pre-cools ahead of it pays for itself.
After hours — the line is answered and the truck rolls for $149 dispatch. Regular scheduling reopens Monday at 7:00 AM.
Installed and actually configured
The $389 install covers an Ecobee, Nest or Honeywell unit, the common-wire work most Valley air handlers need, and — the part that gets skipped — configuration against your actual utility plan. Pre-cool the house to 74° through the cheap early afternoon, coast through the 4–7pm peak window with the compressor mostly idle, and the same August is $40–$70 cheaper on a typical SRP time-of-use plan without anyone touching a schedule again.
Heat pump owners: bring the model number or a photo of the old thermostat wiring. Auxiliary heat staging configured wrong is invisible in October and expensive in January, and it is the single most common defect we find in DIY smart thermostat installs.
